American strategist Tony Dwyer had a positive upbeat message to give to a ’terrific full house’ of island investors.

Mr Dwyer’s message was: ’Looking through the noise, staying invested and focusing on the fundamentals which remain positive.’

Asked by Business News what the ’noise’ was, the New York based expert replied: ’It has to do with politics, whether it is Brexit, whether it is Trump, it’s looking through political noise and remembering that investments are based on fundamentals, and they still remain positive, like they were a year ago.’

Mr Dwyer, portfolio strategist for Cannacord Genuity Wealth Management, said: ’People forget that we had Trump a year ago, we had Brexit a year ago.’

Mr Dwyer is frequently on various financial news television networks such as CNBC, FOX Business and Bloomberg.

Speaking minutes after addressing a packed audience in a Canaccord Genuity organised event at the Claremont Hotel, Douglas, Mr Dwyer said that in the US the ’fundamentals’ for investors were still getting better.

To illustrate this he pointed to breaking news and the fact that US small businesses have never felt this good, at least according to the National Federation of Independent Business’ small business optimism index.

The lobbying group’s monthly index hit 108.8 in August, the index’s highest level in its 45 year history. The reading eclipsed the the previous record high of 108 from July 1983.

Mr Dwyer said people were surprised that we were nine years into an economic recovery but he firmly believes the good news will continue. Mr Dwyer said: ’Our view is that it [a recession] should be at least two years away.’

He added : ’People should stay invested and look through the noise.’

Mr Dwyer admitted people were ’tense because of the politics.

’But when they look at their business, their incomes and their own consumer households they are positive.

’So it is almost, I would say, a nervous positive.’

Business News suggested that many people had never known such a volatile president as Donald Trump.

Mr Dwyer replied: ’But the markets have told you that does not matter, and that’s our theme, the markets follow the fundamentals.

’The markets are looking through the political noise.

’We need to remember history. We forget every [presidential] term brings its own political theatrics.

’But ultimately my job is to talk about the market and the market does not follow theatrics, it follows fundamentals.’

Tony Dwyer joined Canaccord Genuity as the firm’s US portfolio strategist in the United States, following the Group’s acquisition of Collins Stewart in March 2012.

As a strategist, Tony is best known for his practical application of macro-economic and tactical market indicators to help institutional clients make better investment decisions.
