Business markets in the United States are looking good despite President Donald Trump’s tumultuous first 100 days in the White House, it has been claimed.

Tony Dwyer is chief market strategist for Canaccord Genuity, based in New York and said he had nothing but positive news to tell for Manx investors.

’It’s great to be back in the Isle of Man, it’s so neat’ said Mr Dwyer on a flying visit to the island to deliver a seminar to business people, based around the 100 days.

He told Business News he was full of praise for Canaccord’s island office and its importance in global business.

Speaking to Business News shortly after flying in to the island from London on Friday Mr Dwyer said the theme of his seminar at the Palace Hotel, Douglas, was the first 100 days under Trump’s presidency.

It is clear Trump has wasted little time in making his mark and barely a day goes by without him making headlines. Controversy seems to follow him everywhere.

But Mr Dwyer, who is based ’about a block away’ from Trump Tower in the heart of Manhattan, and often appears on financial news television networks such as CNBC, Fox and Bloomberg, claims Trump has been ’one of the best presidents in history, for the markets, in his first 100 days.’

He agrees there has been ’a little volatility in the headlines from him, self generated.’

But asked if we have anything to fear he says: ’So far, not. We gave a presentation in London and someone asked the question: ’’With such a volatile personality as the president would you not expect higher volatility in the markets as a whole?’’

’And the truth is that it is one of the lowest historical volatility periods in the history of the major market index in the US.

’Therein lies the evidence that the fear was worse than the reality.

’The fear was that he [Trump] was going to create volatility in the market. The reality is that there has not been any, none at all.

’It’s the lowest volatility on record.

’It’s great for investors because it’s clear the market is concentrating more on what the outlook for earnings and economic activity is versus what the outlook for Donald Trump’s next tweet is.’

Asked what the mood is like in the States he said: ’It’s great, consumer confidence is at an historic high.

’If you look at consumer confidence every age bracket is at the cycle high. So the millenials who are, in theory, all out protesting, are actually kind of working in a job. It’s the ones without a job who are out protesting. And it’s really the employment that keeps people confident or not confident.

’Unemployment is so historically very low in the States.’

Mr Dwyer said Mr Trump had ’done a good job of focusing on trying to get the employment picture better in the US.’

He was elected on the basis of America First ’and he seems to be following through with that.’

Mr Dwyer, who admits he is right-leaning towards the Republicans, appeared to dismiss Mr Trump’s talk about building a wall between Mexico and the US. He said: ’It makes great headlines but there’s no construction of any wall going on right now.

He admitted firms were bidding to build one but ’we will see what actually happens but most of the policies that he campaigned on have been lessened as he’s been president.’

Mr Dwyer said: ’When he’s the CEO of his own company he can change his mind and dictate policy. When he’s the President of the United States, with a Congress, a legislative branch, a judiciary branch, checks and balances, other people around him, you can’t just make a decision and change policy, it does not work that way.’

Mr Dwyer described Mr Trump, who was famous for the Celebrity Apprentice, as a ’media guy.’

’I do lean to the right but I won’t say who I voted for,’ said Mr Dwyer who lives in New Jersey. Mr Dwyer said he has an ’optimistic [business] message.’ Mr Dwyer said there was an extra special relationship between America and the British Isles and he could see no reason why that would change.

Mr Dwyer said the Isle of Man office of Canaccord is ’a very successful and high quality branch serving the local and international community.

’It’s a terrific branch. Dermot [Hamill] does a fantastic job for us.

’There was so much fear surrounding Donald Trump but the markets have rallied, economies have accelerated.’

He also had words of praise for the UK prime minister Theresa May.

He said: ’We are still optimistic for the fundamental backdrop of investing in equities globally and in the US. And I have not brought any bad news to the Isle of Man.’
