Hector Duff, one of the greatest living Manxmen, has celebrated his 100th birthday this week with a party at Government House.

Mr Duff’s party was hosted by Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard and Lady Gozney.

Leading the tributes to Mr Duff, Tynwald President Steve Rodan wished Mr Duff a happy birthday on behalf of the court at the beginning of this week’s sitting.

Mr Rodan added: ’A great Manxman who in the course of a remarkable life has been inspirational to many and indeed continues to inspire today’s generation.’

Chief Constable Gary Roberts also praised Mr Duff on marking his 100th birthday saying ’he is a remarkable man, whom I admire greatly’.

Mr Roberts added: ’Not just for his courage and for the service that he has given over such a long life, but because of the inspiring way that he has chosen to teach young people about the horrific reality of war. I have never met anyone like him. I am proud to be his friend.’

During the evening, Mr Duff was presented with a cake and received a toast from His Excellency.

Sir Richard also presented him with an award for his ’exceptional veteran service’ to the community of the island on behalf of the Queen.

Earlier in the day, Mr Duff had also received a special postal delivery of a birthday card from Her Majesty.

Isle of Man Post Office said: ’We were happy to play a very small part in Hector Duff’s 100th Birthday.’
