Many bands will say that to get anywhere, not only do you have be technically good, professional and committed to your music, you also need that element of luck on your side.
One new duo, who are gearing up to release their debut album later this year, know that all-to-well, as a chance encounter through the online trading website, Ebay, led to them working with a well-respected European music producer.
Bahuki, formed by singer Rob Miller and guitarist Lee Meier, ended up recording with the German producer Manfred Faust, who has worked with big names, such as Jimmy Somerville, at the ’Granny’s House’ studios in Hamburg, after they were heard on a demonstration soundtrack on Ebay.
’It all came about when my brother was selling some audio equipment on Ebay,’ said Rob.
’He had originally recorded a couple of songs me and Lee had put together, and used some of the recordings to show the gear off. They were heard by a music engineer in the UK, who got in touch and said that he wasn’t interested in the gear, but he wanted to know who the singer was!’
The music producer in question had worked with many well-known acts, such as Athlete, and he ended up offering the band advice on how to capture their sound and, ultimately, putting them in touch with some of his contacts in Germany.
’We went out there in the summer of 2016, and did all the recording and mastering our there over two weeks.
’We worked with two superb sessions musicians, Alex Grube, who played bass and Reiner ’Hubert’ Kallas, who played keyboards. We lived, breathed and ate the music,’
They have also been working on shooting music videos since they finished work on the album, entitled ’Tell It To The Worms’, and they aim to have everything ready for release during the summer.
Both Rob and Lee are familiar faces around the local music circuit. Rob was the former lead singer with ’Grambo’, who supported the Doves at the Villa Marina in 2010, and Lee was the lead guitarist in the popular groups Jacoba and Uber Room.
Bahuki hope to organise some island concert dates to coincide with the album release later this year.
