University of York student Chess Warren has won the prestigious ’Best Chart Show’ award at this year’s Student Radio Awards.
The third year law student from Castletown co-presented the University Radio York (URY) show with fellow student Liam Daly.
They beat a number of other university stations for the title, including Falmouth and Penryn’s Surf Radio and Cardiff’s Xpress Radio - who came second and third respectively.
Their prize is the opportunity to present the BBC Radio One chart show on New Year’s Eve, live from the BBC’s Broadcasting House in London.
Miss Warren said: ’It’s kind of sinking in at this point.
’I had a look at the Radio One listening figures the other day and I kind of regret doing that because it’s a lot of people unsurprisingly.
’But it’s just kind of sinking in now.’
In what has become a tradition for the national broadcaster in recent years, guest presenters take over the entire line-up of shows between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day - allowing up and coming talent to make a splash.
Miss Warren said: ’It’s all live, all in the studio, so it’s very very exciting.
’It’s not like I’ve never done live radio before, but it’s still exciting.’
Asked if pursuing a career in radio was the ultimate dream, Miss Warren said: ’I joined the [student radio] station because I really love talking about music.
’I was in a band when I was in the island, and I kind of wanted to carry on that love somewhere else and in a different way, and the radio was how I channelled that.
’It’s kind of my happy space. But I think I want to go into something legal from a music perspective.
She then joked: ’But you know, if I’m fantastic on Radio One and they want to turn around and oust Scott Mills for me - I’m not exactly going to say no to that am I?
’I do really, really love it.’
Radio One have a history of giving permanent jobs to guest presenters who do well in their slots at Christmas.
Dean McCullough, who presents on the station between 10.30am and 1pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays first had a guest slot over the Christmas period last year.
The 21 year old said: ’I’m just going to have some fun with it really, I love speaking on air. It just gives you such a real buzz.
’But unlike when I’m on URY, I can’t be like "Oh don’t worry, it’s just student radio, no-one’s really listening" because I mean it is Radio One at New Year’.
’I’m not nervous. I probably will be coming up to it, but it’s going to be such fun and that’s kind of all that matters to me.’
In an ideal world where she could control the charts, what would she like to play during her slot?
She said: ’We’ll see. It depends whether we’re able to put any requests in. I always like to hear a little bit of either Arlo Parks or Easy Life on the airwaves but we’ll see if they’re in the charts!’
