Both the police and charity Victim Support have responded to the sentencing of rapist Christian Lima.
Public Protection Unit Detective Inspector John Mitchell said: ‘The sentence handed down to Christian Lima goes some way to reflect the appalling crimes he committed.
‘The bravery of the victim to remain resolute throughout the court process is to be commended.
‘We would hope that this sentence gives people the strength and confidence to report crimes of this nature to us in the knowledge that they will be thoroughly investigated by specialist detectives.’
Victim Support has seen a 42% increase in sexual violence victims approaching the charity for support between January and June this year, compared to the same period last year.
Victim Support gives free and confidential help to victims and witnesses of crime, their family and friends.
It confirmed that from January to June 2022, the charity has supported 51 victims of sexual violence which has increased by 42% in comparison to the same period in the previous year.
Kelly Knight, welfare officer at Victim Support, who is also a sexual violence advisor, said: ‘The impact of the sexual violence on victims has life changing implications, especially when carried out by an intimate partner.
‘Rape Crisis UK states that one in two rapes against women are carried out by their partner or ex- partner.
‘This highlights that sexual violence can happen in relationships and that it is a crime.
‘Although this statistic relates to women, intimate partner sexual violence can happen in any relationship and is not defined by gender or sexuality.’
If you or someone you know have been a victim of such violence, help and support is available.
