An artist is looking to create a lasting, collaborative work of art to serve as a testament to the island’s strength of community.
Debra Tracey-Carney has come up with an idea to involve as many people as possible to create individual Three Legs of Mann mosaics, which will then be joined together to create a larger work of art which will go on display when the current restrictions are lifted.
Debra, a community artist who, up until March, ran art workshops and sessions at the Hub, based in Thie Rosien, Port Erin, has created a mosaic kit, consisting of a 15 centimetre wooden template, glass tiles, glue, grout and instructions, which people can buy online.
The resulting mosaics can then either be kept as a personal memento or returned to Debra, who will add it to the other submitted mosaics to create a larger display piece.
’The mosaic project is all about connecting with each other on some level, even though we can’t actually connect in person,’ said Debra.
’What I would like the mosaics to represent is a beautiful visualisation of what we all went through together.’
The kits for the project, which is backed by the Isle of Man Arts Council and Culture Vannin, cost £12.50 each. People who wish to send their completed Three Legs mosaics back to Debra will receive a voucher to spend on further arts materials.
As well as the detailed instructions which come with the kits on how to crate your mosaic, Debra has also recorded instructional videos, available to view on her website.
’This project is all about connecting and engaging with people who are at home.
’I’m not looking to make money out of a miserable time, rather to engage with people and let people be involved with a community project, should they wish.’
Debra also has mosaic kits to give away to free to selected groups and individuals.
Although these have been identified, Debra said that she will consider suggestions of one or two individuals who would benefit from participating.
