Architects and artists are invited to design and install a shelter in Conrhenny Community Woodland in Lonan.

Culture Vannin and Isle of Man Arts Council have joining forces with the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture to invite submissions to create a ’unique and recognisable landmark’ that will celebrate UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and show the connections between culture and the arts, wellbeing and the natural environment.

Environment Minister Geoffrey Boot said: ’As a UNESCO Biosphere, we strive to connect people with nature.

’The shelter will encourage people to spend time in the peaceful setting of the community woodland, increasing their appreciation of their surroundings and providing space for relaxation, wellbeing and creativity.’

The design brief states the shelter should provide protection from the elements for walkers and cyclists while encouraging a greater sense of connection between them and the landscape.

A number of predominantly south-facing and elevated areas within the woodland have been suggested.

It should use and locally-sourced, sustainable materials.

Collaborations are encouraged. A full design brief is available from Culture Vannin.

Submissions should be made on the government portal by October 14.
