An eight-year-old with Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy will be climbing the island’s highest peak in aid of Rebecca House Isle of Man.
Dylan Walton, whose Cerebral Palsy effects his ability to walk, will be going the extra mile for the charity by completing the first 414m around the NSC unaided and later walking from the Bungalow to Snaefell’s summit with support.
The young fundraiser has a rare condition called Periventricular Leucomalacia.
He was referred to Rebecca House in 2013 for respite care following surgery to help ease the pain in his legs and improve movement in his calves.
He was recently inspired to give something back after hearing about Tobias Weller, a nine-year-old with cerebral palsy from Sheffield, who raised thousands by completing a marathon on his walker for 70 days on the street outside his home.
Dylan’s mum, Lisa, said: ’Rebecca House has not only helped Dylan come out of his shell, it’s helped him make some amazing friends and be the person he is today.
’He’s most looking forward to making it to the top and getting lots of new toys for him and his friends to play with, once Rebecca House reopens.’
Dylan hopes raise funds towards a playground and new toys for the children of Rebecca House as part of his ’Dylan’s Day’ fundraiser.
On his Snaefell part of the walk, he will receive support from his mum, dad Jack and members of the civil defence with members of the Rebecca House also attending.
Hospice chief executive officer, Anne Mills, will be putting on her hiking boots and supporting Dylan every step of the way.
She said: ’I am so proud of Dylan’s courage and kind-hearted approach in going that extra mile to help raise funds for Rebecca House, and cannot thank him enough for taking on this wonderful challenge.
’Dylan I have true admiration for your ambition and generosity, and look forward to walking with you and cheering you on as you help us to continue making a life-changing difference to other vulnerable children of our island.’
Dylan aims to finish his challenge on July 25.
