The island’s new Bishop has been consecrated at a ceremony in York Minister.

Bishop of Sodor and Man Peter Eagles is expected to be enthroned at Peel Cathedral sometime in the autumn.

Thursday’s consecration service at York Minster was led by the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu.

Dr Peter Wilcox became Bishop of Sheffield at the same ceremony.

A strong Manx contingent was in the Minster to witness the dawn of a new era in the history of the Anglican church in the island.

The Archbishop of York described Peter Eagles as ’a man of great holiness and gentleness of spirit’. He revealed the island’s new Bishop has already started to learn Manx.

Bishop Peter succeeds the Right Reverend Robert Paterson who resigned in November last year.

Before taking up his new role, Venerable Peter Eagles, 57, was Deputy Chaplain-General HM Land Forces, Archdeacon for the Army, and Honorary Canon of Salisbury Cathedral.

He trained for the priesthood at St Stephen’s House, Oxford and first became an army chaplain in 1992, and has been Archdeacon for the Army since 2011.

As Bishop, he will secure a seat - and a vote - in the Legislative Council.
