One of Brazil’s most respected samba and choro guitarists will perform at the Peel Centenary Centre as part of a European tour.
Rogério Souza will take to the stage on Saturday, October 24, alongside Hamburg-based guitarist Nikolai Voigt, with island trio Bossa das Ondas also joining them during the evening.
The workshop will take place in the Atholl Room at the Peel Centenary Centre from 11am to 2pm.
The concert has been organised by Bossa das Ondas, whose members persuaded Souza to add the island to his tour itinerary during a visit to Rio de Janeiro earlier this year.
Souza has enjoyed a career spanning several decades and has performed and recorded with some of Brazil’s best-known musicians, including Baden Powell, Paulinho da Viola, Sivuca, João Bosco and Elza Soares.
He has also been a member of Brazilian instrumental groups Nó em Pingo d’Água and Época de Ouro, and was an editor of Songbook Choro, an anthology dedicated to the country’s vibrant and upbeat choro music.
For the Peel performance, Souza will pay tribute to legendary Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos ‘Tom’ Jobim, whose work helped introduce bossa nova to audiences around the world.
The programme will include music associated with Jobim, including The Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado, Wave and Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars).
Souza also has a personal connection to Jobim, having grown up alongside his son in Rio de Janeiro.
Carmel Croukamp, of Bossa das Ondas, said: ‘It is a huge honour to welcome Rogério to the island. There’s nothing like hearing these rhythms and styles that we actually all know and love in their authentic, original acoustic form, and Rogério is a truly legendary figure in Brazilian instrumental music.’
Voigt, who is accompanying Souza on his European tour, specialises in Brazilian choro and classical guitar.
He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and spent extended periods in Uruguay and Brazil, developing his knowledge of choro and Brazilian musical traditions.
The concert will be accompanied by a daytime workshop, ‘Introduction to Brazilian Music’, aimed at musicians of all abilities and musical backgrounds.
Souza and Voigt will be joined by Chicago percussionist Adam Haus and members of Bossa das Ondas to introduce participants to Brazilian styles including bossa nova and samba.
Musicians can bring instruments including acoustic guitar, mandolin, ukulele, flute, clarinet, saxophone, accordion and violin, while authentic Brazilian percussion instruments will also be available to try.
Following the concert, musicians and audience members will be invited to an informal pub jam in Peel, inspired by traditional Rio choro sessions.
Bossa das Ondas members Andy Marshall, Mark Burrows and Carmel Croukamp formed the trio to promote Brazilian musical traditions and collaborative events in the island.
Tickets for the evening concert and spaces for the workshop are available through the Peel Centenary Centre.
