The organisers of the annual Onchan horticultural show have described the event as ‘an overall success’.

Held at the Elim Family Centre in Onchan recently, this was the 78th edition of the show, which is held every year by the village’s horticultural society.

Over time, the event has developed beyond a straightforward flower and vegetable competition. Since the 2010s, its programme includes flowers, fruit, vegetables, pot plants, confectionery, photography, flower arranging and crafts, alongside classes for children.

This year’s Blue Ribbon award (best in show) was awarded to Derek Crellin for his impressive display of vegetables.

Many others were awarded prizes during the event, such as Cheryl Wrench, Edith Quaggin, Evie Traynor, Jean James, Jean Kewley, Mercy Sharma and Robert Middleton.

A strong number of entries were entered this year among many different classes, including decorative art, confectionery, craft and children's classes showing a ‘wealth of talent’.

A spokesperson from the Onchan Horticultural Society commented: ‘We attracted a strong number of entries this year.

‘Congratulations to Derek Crellin for his best in show award as well as all the other prizewinners.

‘The committee would like to thank everyone who entered the show, as well as those who helped behind the scenes and came along to support the event. The continued support from the local community is greatly appreciated.’
