Liverpudlian singer Jamie Webster recently graced the island with his presence as he performed a one-night stint at the Villa Gaiety.

Supporting him was 43-year-old musician Wez Clarke who lives in Castletown.

He found out he would be taking to the stage only 48 hours before the gig.

The last-minute news gave him little time to prepare, but he said it also meant there was less opportunity to overthink the performance.

‘I would say it helped as you've got less time to overthink things and you just click into a mindset of doing what comes naturally instead.’

Despite not getting the chance to meet Webster, Wez said he would happily share a pint with the singer if he returns to the island.

For him, one of the most memorable parts of the night was seeing the way music brought people together.

‘I think the one thing I'll remember most about the night, aside from Jamie's brilliant performance, is the fact music still has the power to connect people in such a positive way.’

Wez finished his set with a cover of Freed from Desire, which saw the crowd singing along.

‘To see happy faces, hear so many voices singing along with me and you genuinely feel that energy when you're on stage, the most memorable part of any gig is the moments you share with people. Friday night was full of amazing moments.’

While the performance may have introduced Wez to a wider audience, he is no stranger to the Manx music scene.

With around 20 years of experience, he has previously performed as vocalist and lyricist for bands The Behavers and Last Cavalier before taking a break.

He returned to performing as a solo artist around 2021 and has since won an island singer-songwriter competition and supported Ben Ottewell of Gomez and Tom Hingley, former frontman of Inspiral Carpets.

Following the opportunity to support Webster, Wez hopes to take his music further, with plans already being made to perform in the UK next year.

‘I intend to carry on doing that and see where it leads next.’
