Singers of all abilities are invited to join a day of contemporary choral music organised by the Isle of Man Choral Society next month.

The Really Big Manx Sing Workshop takes place on Saturday, 7 November, at Trinity Church, Rosemount, Douglas, under the direction of conductor Janet McDowell.

Featuring works by composers Karl Jenkins, John Rutter and Eric Whitacre, the workshop will include familiar favourites alongside music that may be unfamiliar to some singers.

Participants will have the chance to improve their vocal skills, learn new pieces and enjoy singing together as part of a group.

Organisers say previous experience of contemporary choral music is not required, and anyone enthusiastic about singing and willing to try something new is welcome to attend.

Sheet music will be provided.

Carole Sutherland said joining a choral workshop could offer benefits beyond improving musical ability.

‘Taking part in a choral workshop is much more than an opportunity to improve singing. It can support musical development, build confidence through learning new songs, strengthen social connections and improve wellbeing.’

She added: ‘Participants can leave with new skills, new friendships and a shared sense of achievement.’

Registration begins at 9am, and the £20 workshop fee includes refreshments throughout the day.

Singers will also be able to demonstrate what they have learned at an informal concert featuring music from the workshop at Trinity Church at 7pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

McDowell has returned to the island’s music scene and taken on conducting roles with several choirs. She is looking forward to leading the event.

The workshop is intended to bring singers from across the Isle of Man together to discover music, build confidence and share the experience of singing with others.

The event is open to singers of all abilities, rather than only those who already belong to established choirs.

Registration opens at 9am, with workshop tickets priced at £20.
