Ramsey Grammar School’s new sixth form study centre has been named in honour of war veteran Hector Duff.
The extension was opened by Mr Duff last week.
He also unveiled a wall mosaic, Our Enchanted Isle, created by year seven students (ages 11 and 12) and devised by artist in residence Elaine Edge.
Head teacher Annette Baker said: ’It was a unanimous decision to choose Hector to open our wonderful new sixth form extension, and we are delighted to name the centre after him. Many generations of young people will be reminded of what he did in the service of his country to preserve the freedoms which we all enjoy.
’Hector is without doubt a legend in his own lifetime but also an important member of the family that is Ramsey Grammar School.’
Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney paid tribute to Mr Duff’s contribution to the education of young people on the island.
Invited guests including director of education Geoff Moorcroft, Tynwald president Steve Rodan and Alfred Cannan MHK were treated to a performance by ex-student, Mera Royle, BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Musician Award winner last year, and the RGS School Choir.
There was also a chance to view artwork by year 13 (ages 17 and 18) students. Iwan Riley and Lewis Withington were both presented with prizes for art and design from the Rotary Club of Ramsey. Iwan’s work ’Connections’ has been put forward for the Soverign Art Prize.
