Young people who vandalised a car park in the island’s capital have been branded ’feral’ by the leader of Douglas Council.

David Christian detailed how the ’hooligans’ had taken the lift to a high floor of Shaw’s Brow car park, while jumping up and down in it, causing damage to the council-owned property. He told councillors that if the damage was repeated, the council ’may be forced to close the car park at night’.

As well as damage to lifts, the car park’s toilets on the ground floor have also been repeatedly vandalised.

Mr Christian said: ’Either their parents or their carers need to control them.

’We’ve said before if we can identify the children, then we will bill their parents for the damage and if they’re in care, we will bill the government.’

Councillor John Skinner asked if the car park had CCTV and if it had been able to identify any of those responsible for the recent damage.

Mr Christian confirmed that the CCTV had identified ’a few of the culprits’.

He added: ’It would be sad to stop people using the car park because of some mindless idiots.

’We shouldn’t have to consider it, but ratepayers can’t be expected to keep paying the costs for repairing the damage.’
