Manx language classes are moving online for the duration of the current lockdown period.

The current restrictions have led to the cancellation of public language classes, with all classes moving to online Zoom meetings.

However, while the teaching of Manx Gaelic in face-to-face groups is still considered a key part of learning to speak a new language, the team behind the lessons is excited about the new potential reach and learning opportunities that teaching online can offer.

For many years, Culture Vannin has held beginners and intermediate-language classes in various locations around the island, which has enabled many to follow with an interest in the language.

The lockdown period last year enabled Culture Vannin to explore the possibilities of teaching online, which has led to a surge of interest in learning Manx around the globe.

’A variety of teachers delivered lessons through online platforms, and the Manx-speaking community also took informal conversational groups online, welcoming new participants into the fold,’ said Ruth Keggin-Gell, the Manx language officer with Culture Vannin.

’Some people on island, saw the advantage of fitting in an online class and having fun learning something new.

’Perhaps most excitingly, the move to hosting classes and conversation groups online meant that Manx speakers and learners from across the globe could now take part in "real life" discussions and sessions.

’We talked with enthusiastic and committed Gaelgeyryn from as far away as North America and Australia, and saw large numbers of Irish and Scottish Gaelic speakers further engaging with their Manx Gaelic counterparts.

’I dread to think what time it is in Adelaide, when I run a lunchtime Zoom class here in the island.’

The global interest proves that there is wide interest in the Manx language that can be beneficial to the island in general

’This reflects how the Manx language is one of the island’s most important cultural assets.

’It is an island success story and something in which we all can take great pride.

’It is great to see interest in Manx culture and language from international audiences, who are keen to be part of a growing community of Manx speakers.’
