More than 30 island’s teenagers have been presented with their Duke of Edinburgh gold awards by the Lieutenant Governor.
Sir Richard and Lady Diana Gozney hosted the presentation evening at Government House on Thursday.
The recipients of the award have spent years working through the three levels and have to demonstrate they have learnt new skills, carried out volunteer work for their community, taken part in physical activity and organised and completed a series of hikes.
Some of the volunteer work this year from those receiving their gold award included Michael Simpson who has been teaching chess and mentoring younger students, Samvir Jandu, who has been fundraising with Junior Achievement and Callan Gooberman who is a crew member with the RNLI.
Alison Barnes, DoE award coordinator said: ’This celebrates the amazing achievements of these young people, all of whom will have given their time to these activities for at least 12 months.
’It was lovely to see so many proud parents and friends there to support them on this occasion, and representatives from the award units, who have guided and helped them complete their award.’
As well as those who carry out their award with Mrs Barnes, King William’s College also had a number of its students achieving their gold award.
It is believed the evening was the first major event to be hosted by Government House since the Covid-19 lockdown began in March.
