With one eye fixed firmly on a positive future in the coming months, an Irish group with a cult following have announced they are set to play in the island later this year.

Two Door Cinema Club are making an appearance at the Villa Marina on Thursday, August 20.

The three-piece indie dance-pop group are looking towards the late summer months when hopefully life will be regaining a semblance of normality.

As well as the island gig, the group also have four high-profile festival appearances to make during August, including performing on the special guest slot at the joint Reading and Leeds festivals, which are still set to take place on the last weekend of August.

Two Door Cinema Club have enjoyed a lot of ups and downs during their career.

Having formed in Bangor, Northern Ireland in 2007, the group, made up of singer Alex Trimble, guitarist Sam Halliday and bassist Kevin Baird, soon found themselves playing to crowds of 30,000 or more at festivals across the world.

Their debut album, ’Tourist History’ became an underground hit, reaching platinum sales with little or no media interest.

This was followed by second album, ’Beacon’, recorded in LA in 2012.

They also performed at the grand opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, along with acts such as Frank Turner.

However, a relentless six-year global touring schedule took its toll on the group and they ended up going their separate ways.

They returned in 2016 with their third album ’Gameshow’, described at the time as a ’modernist pop triumph’ and saw their indie-pop sound, already heavily influenced by the likes of the Foals and the Maccabees, embellished with more mainstream dance pop influences, such as Prince, Madonna, Chic and Kraftwerk.

Last year saw the release of fourth album, ’False Alarm’, which is awash with the synth-pop, disco and electro-funk elements that had begun creeping in on ’Gameshow’, but with extra hints of industrial rock, space pop and psychedelic added.

Tickets are on sale now, priced £37.50, available online from villagaiety.com.

The Welcome Centre and Villa Marina box office are currently closed.
