A total of 47 healthcare workers in the island have tested positive for coronavirus.

The figure was announced by Health and Social Care Minister David Ashford on Saturday.

Several graphs were also released which provided information on how the virus was being spread in the island.

Speaking at the press briefing, Mr Ashford said: ’This virus is indiscriminate of age or gender.

’Being a particular type of person will not protect you from this virus.’

The data showed there were 30 active cases among healthcare workers and four workers had been hospitalised.

In addition, 13 workers had been discharged or presumed recovered.

The highest number of confirmed cases across the island has been among residents aged 50 to 64 with 74 cases.

The second highest frequency is among people aged 35 to 49 with 70 cases, followed by 20 to 34-year-olds (61 cases), aged 80-plus (40 cases), and 65 to 79 (34).

Twelve residents aged up to 19 have also tested positive.

Mr Ashford said: ’The spread is starting to move across the full spectrum of ages however it is still interesting to note that the age bands under 65 have most positive test results although that profile may change over the coming weeks and months.’

He added: ’This graph clearly illustrates that this isn’t a virus that just attacks the older members of society.’

More women than men have tested positive, 56% or 163 women compared with 44% or 128 men.

Data has also been released about the spread of the virus.

The highest proportion of cases (40.21%) has been through close contact, followed by community transmission in 38.14% of cases.

Some 21.65% of cases had travel history.

The Minister said the graph highlighted the importance of social distancing.
