The island has a higher rate of deaths from drugs misuse than England.
The figure was released as part of the island’s Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF), which includes information on a range of indicators of health and wellbeing.
Dates of the figures range from 2015 to 2017, so may not reflect the exact current state of the island’s health.
The Manx rate from drug misuse is calculated at 8.7 per 100,000 while England’s rate is 4.3. The highest rate in England is in Blackpool where 18.5 out of 100,000 deaths are related to drugs misuse while East Riding in Yorkshire had the lowest rate at 1.1 per 100,000.
Dr Henrietta Ewart, director of public health, said: ’The launch of this second edition of our PHOF comes after several years of sustained hard work.
’Data by itself will not give us all the answers or make decisions for us, but it is absolutely critical in illuminating where we need to focus our efforts across government and more widely to obtain the best health outcomes for all.’
Suicide rates in the island are similar to England. Here, the rate is 10.2 per 100,000 while in England it is slightly lower at 9.9. However men are more than twice as likely (13.7) to kill themselves as women (6.4) in the island.
Motorists in the island area more than twice as likely to be killed on Manx roads as the death rate equates to 81.2 per 100,000 while the English average is 40.8.
The highest in England is the City of London with a rate of 708 per 100,000 while the lowest is South Gloucestershire with 17.
Smoking is however lower on the island, with a 11.1 per 100,000 rate, while in England that figure is 15.5.
The highest rate in England is in Kingston upon Hull with a rate of 24.2 and the lowest is Harrow with a rate of 7.4.
The island’s life expectancy rate is similar to England, except for the estimated healthy life for Manx women, who are calculated to have 57.9 years of a healthy life, compared to the English rate of 63.8.
However, the male life expectancy at birth is 79.1, with the English level slightly higher at 79.6. The lowest in England is Blackpool at 73.5 years while the highest is Kensington and Chelsea at 83.2.
For women, the life expectancy rate is 83.2, higher than England at 83.1. The lowest life expectancy for women is Manchester at 79.5 while the best is Camden at 86.5.
Other figures to come out of the data includes that fewer women breast feed in the island (68.4%) compared to England where the figure is 74.5%.
An area the island does much better than England at is the health of the elderly. The figures show that emergency hospital admissions in over 65s relating to falls is 1789.5 per 100,000 compared to England’s rate of 2170.
