Tributes have been paid to well-known Manx musician and senior civil servant Anna Goldsmith, who died following a short illness.

A familiar face in the Isle of Man's music scene and across the island's public sector for more than two decades, Anna was remembered as a talented performer, dedicated public servant and valued colleague.

News of her death was announced on Manx Radio, where presenter and close friend Christy De Haven shared the news during the Home Run programme.

Christy will also pay tribute to Anna during Live Lounge between 7pm and 9pm on Saturday, with listeners invited to share their own memories and tributes.

Former acquaintance and musician John Gregory said: 'A great singer, musician, songwriter and performer. Though I had not seen Anna for years, I certainly never forgot her and often wondered how she was. I am so sad to hear this news. Anna was a much loved and hugely talented figure in the Manx music scene.'

Musician Davy Knowles also paid tribute, saying: 'This is heartbreaking news to hear. Such a lovely, lovely person, and a truly amazing artist.'

Alongside her contribution to the island's music scene, Anna built a distinguished career in public service.

On her LinkedIn profile, she described herself as someone who thrived on variety, collaboration and projects that make a difference.

Most recently, she served as Head of Policy Development within the Isle of Man Government, a role she had held for almost five years.

She was also a deputy clerk at Onchan Commissioners.

Her career also included positions within the Cabinet Office and the Department of Infrastructure, after beginning her professional career with Manx Airlines in 1997.

Colleagues and friends at the Cabinet Office also paid tribute to Anna.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the department said: 'Anna was a well-loved colleague and friend in the Cabinet Office, where she worked, most recently as Head of Policy Development.

‘She was a committed and passionate public servant for more than 20 years, having also worked in the Department of Infrastructure and spent time at Ellerslie.

‘Anna was inspired by the island and passionate about the outdoors. That passion was at the heart of some of her work, creating spaces such as Garey Yn Ellan Ain in St John's and initiatives such as the Dark Skies Benches, giving us all the opportunity to appreciate some of the best things the island has to offer.

As the Department of Infrastructure officer responsible for the island's footpaths, Anna brought all of that passion into her work.

During her time with the Cabinet Office, she was responsible for many successes, including the all-encompassing Year of Our Island in 2018, which was recognised with the Public Sector Achievement of the Year award at the Awards for Excellence.

‘More recently, Anna worked with the Housing and Communities Board to deliver its priorities. One standout achievement was the Homelessness Strategy. Nobody needs to sleep rough on the Isle of Man now because of the work Anna led to implement the strategy.’

The department said she was also instrumental in delivering a number of other initiatives, including the first Holiday Activity and Food Scheme and the 2023 Cost of Living Response, which included the establishment of warm spaces across the community.

‘Anna was a supportive colleague, always ready to help or advise anyone. Working at the heart of the Cabinet Office is not for the faint-hearted, with its fast-paced environment and diverse priorities, but Anna took everything in her stride,’ a spokesperson added.

‘Our thoughts are with Robbie, James and her beloved family and friends. She will be greatly missed.'

MHK Kate Lord-Brennan said: 'Knowing the team in the heart of the Cabinet Office, they will be absolutely beside themselves and struggling to take this in. She was held in high regard, trust and esteem amongst her colleagues, and it was a true pleasure to know and work with her.'

John Gregory also recalled Anna's generosity, adding: 'Back in 2009 I organised a charity concert to raise awareness of depressive illness and Anna was one of the first people I asked to take part and she said "yes" straight away. She gave an exceptional performance.'
