Members of Tynwald have voted to include war hero Hector Duff OBE onto the Manx Patriots’ Roll of Honour.
They voted unanimously during Tuesday’s Tynwald session to add Mr Duff’s name to the document, which gives formal recognition to deceased persons who have made an outstanding contribution to Manx life.
A D-Day veteran and policeman, Mr Duff was considered by many to be a heroic Manxman, recognising his passion for educating younger generations about his experiences in the Second World War by visiting schools across the island.
Mr Duff died in December at the age of 101.
Chief Constable Gary Roberts added his praise for Mr Duff, saying he was ’a remarkable man, perhaps the greatest person it has been my privilege to know’.
Mr Duff’s funeral was held at St Peter’s Church in Onchan December 10, with the church filled to capacity of people including Chief Constable Gary Roberts, Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney, Chief Minister Howard Quayle, Speaker of the House of Keys Juan Watterson and many others.
Children from Onchan Primary School also paid their respects by gathering at the town’s war memorial as Mr Duff’s funeral cortege drove past.
The Manx Patriots’ Roll of Honour is currently on display in the foyer of Legislative Buildings and in the Royal Chapel at St John’s.
