An iconic machine which the legendary Joey Dunlop rode to victory at his last ever TT is going up for auction soon.

The Vimto Honda SP-1 that Yer Maun guided to glory in the Formula 1 TT in 2000 is expected to fetch a six-figure sum when he goes under the hammer in Birmingham in November.

The historic 999cc Honda VTR1000 SP-1 has been given an estimated value of between £80,000 and £100,000 by Iconic Auctioneers, which will offer the machine for sale at the NEC Classic Motor Show on Sunday, November 15.

Dunlop produced one of the most memorable performances in TT history aboard the machine when winning the Formula 1 race, before going on to finish third in the Senior.

The victory was one of Dunlop's last in his remarkable TT career – helping him complete a memorable hat-trick at the 2000 meeting, with the Ballymoney rider also winning the Lightweight and Ultra Lightweight races.

The 26-time TT winner was tragically killed in Tallinn, Estonia a few weeks later.

The SP-1 was one of two factory-kit Hondas purchased by Paul Bird for the 2000 British Superbike Championship and was originally allocated to former island resident James Toseland.

Following the latter's testing accident at Cadwell Park, the machine was raced by Dunlop during the build-up to the TT.

The bikes were painted in the distinctive purple colours of sponsor Vimto and Dunlop's machine underwent significant preparation after he and team-mate John McGuinness found themselves outpaced by Yamaha R1s at the North West 200.

Honda responded by supplying Dunlop's machine with an Aaron Slight World Superbike-specification engine and Showa suspension, while factory personnel were also sent to the TT to support the team.

The changes paid dividends as Dunlop went on to claim a memorable and emotional Formula 1 victory in a special one-off red and black liveried Honda.

A few days later, he rode the machine – in the purple colours of sponsor Vimto – to third place in the Senior race in what was his final TT.

Following the meeting, the Aaron Slight engine and much of the special suspension were removed and the bike was returned to its British Superbike specification, while retaining some of its specialist components.

The bike was subsequently sold at the end of the same season to Dennis Berwick, who ran his son Peter and Jason Davies in the British Superbike Championship during 2001 and 2002.

After changing owners a couple of times in private sales in the intervening years, this will be the first time the machine is being offered publicly, therefore it's a rare opportunity to purchase an historic machine.

The Honda SP-1 machine that John McGuinness rode to his first podium in the 2000 Formula 1 TT is also going up for auction in November and is estimated to fetch between £50,000-60,000.
