Mera Royle, 18, lives in Maughold with her family.
A former pupil at Scoill Ree Gorree, Ramsey, she is currently studying for her A levels at Ramsey Grammar School.
Mera is a talented multi-instrumentalist, who specialises in playing the harp. Earlier this year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, she was named as the young folk musician of the year in a gala ceremony held in Belfast.
She will appear at the Cropedy, Towersy and Cambridge Folk Festivals during the summer
What is your idea of a perfect meal?
I’m vegan, and I love to eat Indian food, and follow it some with apple crumble for pudding.
What is your favourite way to relax?
I like watching films, TV Shows and reading. I love it when you find a really good TV series and get hooked on it. I like buying cosmetic face masks to put on whilst I’m watching.
What is your greatest extravagance?
My harp is definitely the most expensive thing I own. I’m learning to drive at the moment and, hopefully, I’ll pass soon, and my greatest extravagance will be buying a car!
Do you have any pets?
I have two dogs. Our chocolate labrador, Mollie, is getting old now so she can’t go on as many walks as she used to, but Belle, our jack russell is the complete opposite and is constantly wanting to go for walks.
What is your greatest achievement?
Probably being nominated for the Radio 2 Young Folk Award. I competed in the National Theatre competition last year in Cardiff, which I was quite nervous for so I was very proud of myself for doing it. I have also perfected making the perfect vegan chocolate cake.
What is your favourite time of the year?
December is my favourite month because it’s my birthday and Christmas, but I like summertime. I’m really looking forward to July this year because my exams will be finished by then.
What is the first job you ever had?
I worked in Rosa’s Pantry in, Parliament Street, Ramsey, washing dishes.
Do you have any irrational fears?
At the moment, my biggest fear is failing my A-levels.
What is your worst habit?
Not doing enough revision!
What is your favourite book?
Harry Potter. I first read them when I was nine and I still enjoy them now
What is your favourite TV programme?
Merlin and Doctor Who were my favourites growing up. I still watch reruns of them now.
What is your favourite band/artist at the moment?
Imagine Dragons. There’s also a trad band up in Scotland who I really like at the moment called Gnoss. I’ve been listening to them non-stop.
What is your favourite part of the Isle of Man?
Ballaglass Glen.
What is the last show/band that you saw live?
Last time I saw any live music was at the BBC Radio 2 folk awards ceremony, where there were loads of folk legends playing like Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band, Lankum, Cara Dillon and Dónal Lunny.
If time/money were no object, what would be your perfect day?
Go to Lapland at Christmas and hopefully see the Northern lights.
