A painting by one of the world’s most renowned artists of the 20th Century was featured at a special exhibition on Manx soil.

Pablo Picasso’s 1925 oil on canvas work ’Paysage de Juan-Les-Pins’ was the star attraction at a temporary display held at the Nunnery just outside of Douglas.

Fine art dealers Gladwell and Patterson from London hosted the event from June 12 to June 13 with family directors Glen Fuller and sister Cory Fuller attending alongside team members Marie-Claire Meredith and Graham Magee.

Cory told the Examiner: ’It was a fabulous venue and an absolutely fabulous turnout. We had a really great time and will definitely come back.

’We bought "Paysage de Juan-Les-Pins" a good number of years ago and we thought it would be something special to take to the island.’

This particular painting by Picasso is based on a small town in the south of France called Juan-les-Pins, which he visited every summer from 1919 before bringing his wife Olga and son Paolo along in later years.

The area is said to have reminded the artist of his hometown in the south of Spain, Malaga, where he was born in 1881.

Painted in the panoramic scene is ’La Vigie’, The Lookout House, a chateau in which Picasso stayed in. Also shown are Aleppo pines, native to the Mediterranean region, and the famous Mediterranean sun and sea.

Picasso is notorious for using the revolutionary style of cubism, which was invented by himself and French artist Georges Braque.

His most famous works include Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and anti-war painting Guernica.

Other globally renowned artists whose work is owned by the collectors include French painters Monet and Francis Picarbia, as well as Fernand Léger.
