Manx Utilities is progressing plans for a solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at Ronaldsway Airport.
The project is set to provide ultra-rapid charging supported by on-site solar generation and battery storage, and is being developed in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure and Ronaldsway Airport.
It follows the delivery of ultra-rapid EV charging facilities at the Sea Terminal in Douglas, with the two projects set to provide charging infrastructure at the island’s principal air and sea gateways.
Manx Utilities said the airport development would support the continued growth in electric vehicle use in the island, while making practical use of renewable energy generated on site.
The combination of solar generation and battery storage is intended to support the operation of the charging hub alongside the ultra-rapid charging facilities.
A Manx Utilities spokesperson said: ‘The Ronaldsway Airport Solar EV Charging Hub is an important addition to the island's charging network.
‘By combining ultra-rapid charging facilities with on-site solar generation, the project will provide convenient charging facilities at one of the island's principal gateways, supporting businesses, visitors and residents, who use electric vehicles.
‘Together with the recently completed facilities at the Sea Terminal, this project will improve access to EV charging at the island's two principal gateways and help ensure the charging network continues to develop in line with growing demand.’
Mark Beveridge, Airport Director said: ‘As the island's main air gateway, we want to ensure our facilities continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of the community.
‘Providing convenient EV charging is another positive step in improving the facilities we offer, while making better use of our estate and supporting the island's wider sustainability ambitions.’
Further updates are due to be provided as the project progresses.
