A Sulby shop and post office, which is a landmark on the TT course, is due to shut in March.

It will be the end of an era for Caley’s General Stores when it closes its doors later this year, with no buyers having come forward since the property went on sale in 2018.

The village shop, owned by Graham Garrett - who has worked behind the counter for 40 years - and his wife Carolyn, was passed on to them by previous owner Raymond Caley, who died in 2017 at the age of 76.

He and his family had been running the store for 60 years.

The shop business, building with accommodation and a plot of land with planning permission to build a house at the rear is for sale with Manxmove for £199,950.

Mr Garrett has previously described the shop as a ’hub of the community’ as many stop by for a coffee and a chat while looking through the shop which is also a newsagents selling the Manx newspapers.

As it is on the Sulby Straight, it has also attracted many notable figures through its doors.

Ian Lloyd, director at Manxmove, said: ’Right on the Sulby straight on the TT course and a great provider to the local village community, it is sadly going to be closing for good unless a buyer is found.

’I have known Graham for many years and have been a customer of this store remembering fondly Raymond behind the counter with a welcoming smile.

’We have had several parties interested in the building and the business also but nobody grabbing the reins to take Caley’s store onto the next chapter in its life.

’Ideas of buyers as a coffee and cake stop for the cyclists, glen walkers and locals, the heart of the community in the northern village with characters a plenty.

’The shop is originally a detached home and as it stands it may well be again.’

He added: ’The Post Office looks like its market and place in the community is changing too. I have a feeling we will be looking back in years to come with the words "if only Caley’s stores had been saved, Sulby would be the better for it".

’People of Sulby and the orth, you still have time left, an ounce of action beats a tonne of talk.’

A short film was released about the shop in 2019, which can be found on Culture Vannin’s website or by searching ’Caley’s Store, Sulby, Isle of Man’ on YouTube.
