A local graphic designer has created a new map of the island, complete with a collection of Manx folkloric figures and tales.
Freelance artist and tutor Juan Moore created the artwork after bowing to popular pressure from people who are fans of his earlier work.
The A2-sized map features Manx folklore characters such as Manannan, the Fynoderee and the Moddey Dhoo, and the illustrations will be instantly recognisable with those familiar with Juan’s work, which in the past has been used by Manx National Heritage and Culture Vannin.
He put it up for sale as a crowdfunding project, essentially with people pre-buying the map before it has been printed, and Juan said he is amazed at the level of interest shown in it.
’I’m delighted that the reaction to it has been really surprising and so far more than 60 people have signed up for it, which is pretty amazing.
’The idea stemmed from one of my earliest commissions creations, a sepia-coloured map of the Isle of Man with some of my illustrations of folklore characters included.
The design proved pretty popular and I have had people asking me where they could find it or have I done something similar.’
Juan’s map can be viewed on indiegogo.com and searching for ’Manannan’s Map of Fantastical Folk of the Isle of Man’.
