A new batch of litter pickers has been donated to Beach Buddies by Manx Utilities in support of the charity’s work.
Litter pickers are an important part of the equipment used by volunteers for Beach Buddies, which holds weekly volunteers’ events across the island, plus numerous sessions for schools and companies throughout the year.
The charity has recently reached the figure of more than 11,000 different volunteers since 2013.
It’s the second time that Manx Utilities has donated litter pickers to Beach Buddies, which is involved in cleaning not only beaches, but also footpaths, parks, glens and plantations.
One recent event involved a record number of volunteers being involved in clearing rubbish from the lake at Mooragh Park in Ramsey.
’This is very much appreciated,’ said Beach Buddies’ founder Bill Dale. ’Manx Utilities approached us, and asked if they could offer their support, and litter pickers were top of the list.
’We need to replace litter pickers on a regular basis, so this offer from Manx Utilities is perfect timing. They will be put to very good use during the next 12 months, especially by the thousands of school children who join us every year. The children just love using the litter pickers.’
The chairman of Manx Utilities, Dr Alex Allinson MHK, said: ’Manx Utilities is pleased to be able support Beach Buddies with a supply of litter pickers while we complete the island’s regional sewage treatment strategy.
’Bill and the Beach Buddies volunteers have been incredibly helpful in supporting our goal to bring rubbish-free beaches to our Island and this contribution is a small way to both support and say thank you for all they have done. We very much hope the litter pickers will come to good use.’
