One the top UK Jazz saxophonists is to appear in the island next month.

Derek Nash and the Funk Experience will make an appearance at the Peel Centenary Centre on Saturday, September 9.

Described as being at the at the forefront of the British Jazz movement, and also as one of the most versatile saxophonists in the UK today, Derek Nash is an award-winning jazz performer and a prolific live entertainer.

He is a pivotal member of two of the UK’s most well known big time jazz groups, the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, which he has been a member of since 2004, and of the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion.

He has also led the famous UK saxophone collective, Sax Appeal, which has featured some of the greatest names in jazz playing. Under his guidance they have won many awards, including the John Dankworth Award and the British Jazz Award for a small group.

He also won the Best Jazz CD of the Year for Young Lions, Old Tigers with the late Spike Robinson and received the same British Jazz Award for "Joyriding" by The Derek Nash Acoustic Quartet in 2012.

With the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, Derek performs up to 100 gigs per year.

Notable gigs have included playing in front of 65,000 people at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium and for over 100,000 at the Glastonbury Festival, where he was a featured soloist.

He is also a regular performer on TV with such greats as Eric Clapton, Amy Winehouse, Emeli Sande, Jessie J, Sir Paul McCartney, Solomon Burke, Annie Lennox, Eddie Floyd, Sam Moore, Madeleine Peyroux, Roger Daltrey, David Sanborn, Eddi Reader and Tom Jones.

’He is renowned for his energetic, vibrant, passionate and charismatic performances, so we are really excited that Derek has found the time to bring his show to Peel.’
