Choose your side and join the Manx sea god Manannan to help connect with the environment of the Isle of Man and help the island flourish!

A new app, entitled ’Manannan’s Charms’ has been released by Culture Vannin as part of its environmentally-aware project ’Mann’s Green Footsteps’.

Developed by Sarah Mercer, ’Manannan’s Charms’ has combined elements of the rich vein of Manx folklore and history with a series of tasks and challenges to get involved with the environment around you.

The app is designed to be used by either individuals of all ages or all the family.

Once logged onto the app, each person takes a short quiz and, depending on the answers given, will be sorted into one of four ’cleins’, separated by certain characteristics and named as ’Fernodyree’, ’Fer-Obbee’, ’Fer-Marrey’ and ’Mooinjer Veggey’.

Once placed into your ’clein’, you are given a list of objectives in the form of a ’charm book’, each of which encourage you to join in with environmental projects both at home and within your community.

It is hoped that families or groups will be able to interact with each other to work through the book of charms.

Sarah, who is currently working through an internship, describes the online social adventure as ’Manx Folklore meets Pottermore meets Greta Thunberg’, referring both to the online work of Harry Potter and the teenage environmental campaigner.

’I wanted to create something that connects people to the island’s folklore and to the environment around us,’ said Sarah.

’It is designed to show that we are all part of the environment and landscape around us and also with the island’s history and culture, that they are all connected and we can all play our part in helping to protect it.’
