Among the many guest authors who are travelling to the island for this weekend’s Manx Litfest, perhaps the best-known of all will be appearing on Sunday evening.

Alexander McCall Smith is to appear at King Williams College for the final event of the literature festival.

He enjoys a reputation as one of the world’s most prolific and best-loved authors, and is best known for his crime fiction series, ’No.1 Ladies Detective Agency’.

Set in Botswana, and centred around the private eye Mma Precious Ramotswe, the series of books has sold more than 20 million books in the English language alone, and in 2008 was made into a hit TV series by the US channel HBO.

His other popular series of novels include 44 Scotland Street, Corduroy Mansions series and the Isabel Dalhousie Mysteries, and he’s also written numerous novels for children.

His first novel was ’White Hippo’, a children’s novel released in 1980.

McCall Smith is also an Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Edinburgh.

An Evening with Alexander McCall Smith’ will shed light on his productive, colourful and varied literary career and how he came to create such memorable characters.

The event takes place at the King’s Court Theatre, King Williams College, from 8pm on Sunday, October 1.
