We have a social media sensation on our hands - namely Ghost, the little cat who has battled against the odds to survive.
We told Ghost’s story on Facebook and Instagram two weeks ago, and the reaction has been remarkable with more than 120,000 people viewing the posts.
Ghost began life as a feral kitten on a farm in the north of the island.
He was attacked by the farmer’s jack russell and lost an eye and part of his mouth.
The farmer couldn’t catch him and so he lived with these terrible injuries for several weeks, with no antibiotics or pain relief.
When the farmer asked us for assistance we were able to catch Ghost using a humane cat trap, and take him to the vets for a check up.
He was very scared, as you can imagine, but he responded almost straight away to human touch - it was as though he knew people were trying to help him.
Since then Ghost has become more and more affectionate and he’s completely won the hearts of cattery staff and volunteers, as well as his world-wide fan club.
The vet was worried that Ghost still had the remnants of an eye in the injured socket, and so last week he went for an operation to ’tidy up’ his wounds and make sure that they could heal in the right way.
He will be able to live a perfectly normal life with one eye, and although he’ll always have a part of his moth missing this does not impact on his ability to eat or drink.
Ghost’s fan club have been incredibly generous and have donated enough money to cover the costs of his surgery. We have had payments from well-wishers from as far afield as the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Hungary and Finland, and local people have been very supportive too.
The cattery team decided that one particular potential adopter stood out from the others as being perfect for Ghost - she lives on a small holding in Maughold with four cats and a cat-loving spaniel, well away from main roads. This will give Ghost space to roam, as he’s used to doing, but in relative safety. He’ll be off to his new home in a few days’ time, as soon as he’s had the last of his vaccinations.
But there are plenty of cats in the cattery who are yet to be adopted.
Possibly the best-looking cat of all time is the silvery grey Maine coon, Jean.
She had a skin condition which made it hard for her previous owner to care for her, but we’ve solved the problem and her coat is now as splendid as it ever was. Jean is a little bit snooty, as befits such a glamorous cat, but she is friendly and she enjoys being pampered.
And if it’s personality more than looks that matters to you, then look no further than Coal and Wish, two adorable, young black Manx cats. They need to eat a specialist dry food to make sure that their digestive system works well, and this has been putting off potential adopters, which is such a shame. They are playful, affectionate and fun-loving girls - good with children and other animals. They will make the perfect addition to a family home, as long as their dietary requirements are catered for.
We can’t look after cats like Ghost, Jean, Coal or Wish, and give them a second chance in life, without the support of the Manx public. Please show your support by coming along to our car boot sale on Sunday, March 24. It’s being held undercover in the Shaw’s Brow car park in Douglas and so it will take place no matter what the weather, and it starts at 11am and finishes at 2pm.
You can park for free in the car park, giving you more to spend at one of the 40 stalls that will be there on the day.
