A charity which is celebrating 10 years helping the Manx public has kicked off its year of fundraising in style.
Manxaid raises money to support other charities and individuals with donations of equipment or goods .
The event to start the year, a dinner at the Palace Hotel, Douglas, coincided with the 90th birthday of co-founder James Douglas.
Mr Douglas said: ’We give help to those in need. We vet them first to ensure they are really in need and do not give them cash, we purchase the equipment or goods for them.
’We make sure the public are aware of what the need was and who it was unless anonymity is requested. The charity was set up because people just ask for money and never expose where it goes to and it generally goes into a general fund.’
To celebrate 10 years, the charity plans to hold events across the year including a series of shows and themed markets.
Wendy Douglas, co-founder said: ’Some of the shows will be of an entertainment type, others will be family orientated. Some will be private functions, some will be ticket only and others will be just turn up on the night. It will depend on the venue we can find to accommodate us.’
Mr Douglas led an extraordinary life before he came to the island, having served President Ronald Reagan for eight years and receiving a flag, which was flown in his honour above the White House, from President Reagan for services to his country.
He said: ’I never expected to reach 90 as in 1989 I was diagnosed with cancer and given only two weeks to live by three different specialists in America. Having previously purchased a second home on the Isle of Man I decided to move here to die.
’Doctors in Laxey interviewed me because I was still alive after two weeks and they read the results of my tests and agreed with the American doctors. But they said: "You could be one in a million. Keep doing what you’re doing and if you have any trouble come and see us".
’That was 30 years ago and I am still here. A miracle. Only God knows what is in store for us and now I live one day at a time.’
The couple said of the charity: ’We are most proud of the hundreds of people we have helped and supported in their time of need.’
