The life of a member of the Manx clergy, described as ‘something of an enigma’, has been investigated in a new book.

‘Manx patriot’, details the life of Canon John Quine, who was born in the Isle of Man in 1857, and is written by Julie Quine, who wrote and researched the book over three years and whose husband, David, is the Canon’s Great Grandson.

John Quine was a miller’s son who became an educated gentleman who could call the likes of A.W. Moore, P.M.C. Kermode, Archibald Knox and T.E. Brown friends.

Described as a ‘typical Victorian’, Quine was a complex character whose private letters portray a very different side of his character.

Julie Quine has self-published other popular books, including some of John’s written works, including ‘The Captain of the Parish’, first published in 1897.
