The Isle of Man Ship Registry has confirmed there will be no investigation into the death of a captain aboard a Manx-flagged oil tanker.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) had listed the death of a crew member who reportedly fell aboard the Isle of Man-registered Whitchallenger while the vessel was docked in Southampton.

The incident was listed as being at the preliminary assessment stage, but the Ship Registry has now confirmed no further investigation will take place after the death was attributed to natural causes.

In a statement to Media Isle of Man, the registry said: ‘On October 16, 2026, Captain Mariusz Gladkiewicz, who was a longstanding Master of the Whitchallenger, an Isle of Man-flagged oil tanker, passed away while the vessel was in Southampton.

‘Local paramedics and the coastguard attended the vessel and Captain Gladkiewicz was subsequently confirmed deceased.

‘The death has been confirmed as having occurred due to natural causes and therefore, the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) will not be conducting a marine casualty investigation.

‘The Isle of Man Ship Registry extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Captain Mariusz Gladkiewicz during this difficult time.’

The MAIB investigates marine accidents involving UK vessels worldwide, as well as incidents involving all vessels in UK territorial waters.

Its investigations aim to establish the causes of accidents at sea, with reports published containing recommendations designed to improve maritime safety.

The Isle of Man Ship Registry refers serious accidents, including those involving serious injuries or fatalities aboard Manx-flagged vessels, to the MAIB for investigation.
