Douglas Council is to clamp down on parking at Noble’s Park.

The move comes because some people use the area to leave motorhomes commercial vehicles and trailers.

The council also has police officers in its sights because some leave their cars in the park as they work at police headquarters nearby.

The parking places order is part of the council’s Noble’s Park traffic management plan.

It means that people who park in the area without authorisation could be fined £100.

Last year, the council began a £1 charge for parking in the paddock area cornered by Glenclutchery Road and Dukes Avenue.

Then Councillor Andrew Bentley said that police officers had ’taken over’ the area after losing car parking spaces outside police headquarters. He said: ’We should have made the Department of Home Affairs pay for police parking since there is no room for their vehicles.’

Parking for vehicle owners using the park for leisure and associated legitimate purposes will be largely unaffected, with most areas becoming disc zones permitting a maximum stay of up to six hours.

The order will permit a maximum stay of 24 hours in a section of the paddock area.

Regeneration and community committee chairman Councillor Stephen Pitts said: ’The parking places order seeks to eliminate indiscriminate long-term parking of oversized vehicles - many of which are unsightly and dilapidated. The council is fully supportive of the government’s active travel strategy, in particular plans to unlock Noble’s Park’s potential as a walking and cycling amenity’ he added.

On-site contractors and authorised commercial operators can apply for exemptions from the council.

The assistant chief officer of regeneration at Douglas Council, Chris Pycroft, said: ’Parking at Noble’s Park will be monitored by council staff and any enforcement action carried out by officers authorised to do so.

’At present this is the community and enforcement team borough wardens. There are various enforcement provisions in the order including issuing additional parking charges of £100 (reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days), prosecution or removal of the vehicle.’
