The leisure pool and flumes at the NSC won’t be open in time for the summer holidays.

All swimming pools in the island can reopen from today (Thursday) after Covid restrictions were lifted.

The main pool at the NSC will open by the end of the month, Education, Sport and Culture Minister Dr Alex Allinson told Tynwald.

But the leisure pool will remain closed and cordoned off.

He said they were close to agreement with the specialist sub-contractor and supplier on remedial works to the flumes, predominantly to the stairs, tower and platform.

The terms of the agreement are commercially sensitive, he said.

Treasury approval will be sought for funding needed to complete the project but Dr Allinson said he could not yet give an estimate for any overspend. He said he would update members on a target opening date but it would not be in time for the summer holidays.

He said he wanted to look into how large contracts are organised once the project is complete. ’As a backbencher it infuriated me, as a Minister even more so,’ he said.
