You’d batter believe there’s such a thing as a Pancake Day race.
The annual event is run in the north of the island by Maughold Parish Social Club.
Once children and adults sign in at Maughold Church hall they walk in groups down to the start line, bringing their all-essential pans with them.
A pancake is provided and after a few practice flips, they’re ready to go. Three, two, one and they’re off!
Pushing up the hill, the different age groups set off one after the other towards the finish line where they must flip their pancakes when reaching marshals along the route.
If a pancake isdropped, the runner picks it up, chucks it back into the pan and keeps going. This year Garff MHK Martyn Perkins had a crack at the race for the first time. Following the adults’ race, he concluded his working shoes let him down and next year the trainers will be on.
His counterpart, MHK Daphne Caine, is a seasoned racer, having taken part for many years. It’s clear a passion for the race is in the blood, as her daughter Jemima scooped first place in her race.
Easter eggs were given as prizes. Once everyone caught their breath, they followed into the hall from drifted the smell of freshly made pancakes - ready for eating.
It turns out traditional lemon and sugar is sweet enough for Mr Perkins who says it’s his go-to topping.
