A major regeneration scheme of Peel’s town centre is being planned by the Department of Infrastructure.
The DoI has applied (20/00455/B) for the scheme saying Michael Street has ’reached the end of its use and life’.
It said it wants to enhance Michael Street and Atholl Place as a ’place to visit, not simply to pass through’.
The proposals include the reconfiguration of the highway and footways with granite paving and the creation of two rain gardens in Atholl Place.
Instead of the traditional way of dealing with rain water, these gardens will intercept the run-off water, providing a more sustainable drainage system, new habitats for wildlife and will visually enhance the town centre.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, consultation with stakeholders has been difficult and no formal consultation has been undertaken with businesses or the public.
Peel Commissioners considered the plans at its meeting on April 16.
And the DoI said agreement has been reached with Bus Vannin, public utility providers and the local authority over what is required.
An agreement with Manx Blind Welfare will see tactile strips installed to assist the visually impaired navigate through the area.
In the application it said: ’The redevelopment proposals provide an opportunity to inject a new lease of life into the town centre.
’The proposals represent a means to combine safer pedestrian movements with the creation of a distinctive and memorable area of public space.
’In addition there would be economic benefits due to both the improve appearance and the resulting easier and safer usage of the streetscape.
’It is vital to raise the profile of the island’s towns and villages after years of decline and deterioration.
The proposals will play a critical role in regenerating this unique and distinctive town centre.’
