The government has submitted plans (21/01454/B) for a new timing hut at the TT Grandstand.
A two-storey timber log cabin will be replacing what is described as the ’dilapidated’ existing timekeeping hut, which is situated on the opposite side from the Grandstand across Glencrutchery road.
An independent structural review conducted in 2018 found that both the hut and the iconic scoreboard (a separate structure) were in such a condition that ’they could not be used after the Festival of Motorcycling in September 2020’.
Since then the TT scoreboards were removed in with some parts going to the Manx Museum, and a temporary one to be installed for the 2022 TT.
The timekeeper’s huts were left in place while options were explored. Designs for a new, permanent scoreboard are hoped to be ready by the TT in 2023.
The new time hut would be decorated with a map of the Mountain Course and feature an analogue clock.
An accompanying planning statement explained how the removal of the huts was considered as an option, but ’ruled out due to the fact the timekeepers play a crucial part in the TT’.
The repair of the huts was also decided against because it would be ’cost prohibitive’.
The statement went into more detail: ’The proposed design of the timekeeper’s hut aims to encompass the TT heritage whilst also being of a modern construction sympathetic to the local surroundings.
’The proposed hut is a timber log cabin painted a dark grey with contrasting lighter grey windows and soffits [overhangs].
’The aim of painting the structure dark grey is to minimise dirt and staining from Glencrutchery Road traffic but also to ensure the hut ties in with the colour scheme of any possible future scoreboard replacement’.
The Department for Enterprise replacement hut will enjoy panoramic views of the pitlane/Glencrutchery Road so that the timekeepers can maintain visual line of sight of the riders.
It will also give officials space for timekeeping officials to work, room for timekeeping equipment and it would also be fully handicapped-accessible.
It would also have a disabled toilet.
The new one will be built in the same spot as the old.
