Manx Wildlife Trust have taken to social media once again to warn people not to interfere with seal pups on the island’s beaches.

It’s after several reports of young seal pups being picked up off beaches and put back into the sea.

This action is not helpful and in fact is very likely to result in the death of the pups as mums will abandon pups that have been interfered with. Mothers will leave their pups, sometimes for hours, but will come back for them.

They will however abandon pups if they feel threatened.

In their post, MWT added: ’Pups also need rest. Young white pups haven’t got the fat layer or waterproofing that older juveniles have, so they are on beaches regularly for the first 3/4 weeks until they are weaned.

’They haven’t been abandoned, the mums won’t be far away.

’Juvenile seals will also haul up for rest, particularly after storms.

’These aren’t to be approached either, as forcing them back in the water when they are exhausted is detrimental to their health.’

If you see a seal pup alone on a beach do not approach it, give it space, and put all dogs on a lead - even those who are well trained.

If you are worried about the health of a seal pup or about it being in a busy location call MWT on 568726, 450879 or 844432 during office hours, or send them a message on Facebook.

The charity has a dedicated band of ’seal sitters’ that will come, put up signage and observe pups on busy beaches.
