Police are urging motorists to take extra care around schools as children across the Isle of Man return to the classroom this week.

The Isle of Man Constabulary has issued a road safety reminder ahead of the new school term starting this Thursday, highlighting that many children will be making the journey to school independently for the first time.

Parents and carers have been asked to park legally and considerately, with drivers reminded never to stop on zig-zag markings or in school entrances.

Pavements, crossings and entrances should also be kept clear, while motorists are being urged to follow the instructions of School Crossing Patrol officers and treat them with respect.

Police are also advising drivers to take extra care when children are getting in and out of vehicles, ensure youngsters are visible to other road users and not use mobile phones while driving.

The force said motorists should not put children at risk by rushing during the morning school run, adding: ‘Leave a few mins earlier and help keep everyone safe.’

Other road users are being reminded that 20mph school speed limits are mandatory and enforceable.

Drivers are being encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys and to expect children to behave unpredictably or become distracted, particularly around schools, crossings and parked vehicles.

The Constabulary said it will carry out high-visibility patrols around schools, as well as parking and speed enforcement where concerns have been identified.

Officers will also undertake education and engagement work with schoolchildren and motorists to promote road safety.

Meanwhile, Ballakermeen High School has reminded parents and carers to clearly label children’s personal belongings ahead of the new term.

The school said labelling coats, uniform, bags, water bottles and equipment makes it easier to return lost property.

Valuable items such as watches, jewellery and keys will be kept safely in the school office.
