The police’s annual anti drink-driving campaign is this year focusing on the theme of ’Making the right choice’ about drinking then driving or driving whilst under the influence of a drug.
The campaign always runs through the month of December, as the police noted that this time of year there is always an increase in people driving after having had too much to drink or being impaired by drugs.
A statement from the police said: ’Our campaign will be played out through an episodic impactive video supported by social media posts across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram that will be published on specific dates starting on Thursday, December 2 with the complete video of all the episodes being released on December 18 and our campaigns final post being published on December 19.
’We are again this year working with our partners at Bus Vannin who will put on additional night owl buses over the festive period and the majority of the island taxi companies to promote the variety of options available to get people home safely after their nights out’.
During last year’s campaign, the police stopped 360 cars, with 72 drivers then subjected to roadside breath tests, resulting in 16 arrests for driving whilst impaired.
This total matched the 16 arrests made during the 2019 campaign, which saw 323 vehicle stops.
