A total of 25 petitions were presented for all to see on Tynwald Day.
The Manx national day saw members of the public deliver petitions for redress of grievance directly to the Clerk of Tynwald at the foot of Tynwald Hill in St John’s.
Calling for a halt on the roll-out of 5G technology on the island ’due to health concerns’ is Petra Stetina, who is asking the government to have it properly tested before introducing it to the island.
’We don’t know the implications this is going to have on all life forms, not just human lives. I think we’re rushing into something here,’ she said.
On the same subject, Stefanie Kerwin handed in her petition urging that the island becomes world leaders in safe technology.
Henry Uniacke of Peel asked members of Tynwald to lead the way along with support from the Manx public and businesses in developing an ’ambitious’ renewable energy programme using the island’s green energy sources and to ’cast a fresh light on the existing debts for current electricity infrastructure’ to not delay development.
Daniel Richardson of Ramsey called for the relaxation of current planning regulations to allow residents to build their own sustainable houses, which will cut down on the island’s carbon footprint.
Douglas resident Peter Dawson urged Tynwald to restore the horse tramway’s original tracks which lay in the centre of the road throughout Douglas Promenade.
In three different petitions, Simon Mann asked for: a consultation on waiting times and the management of Noble’s Hospital, plus the provision of urgent medical services; an Isle of Man Health Service Independent Review Body; and for extended rights for petitioners on Tynwald Day.
David Watts of Castletown urged a select committee to be set up to look into the academic results and performance management regime of the island’s primary and secondary schools. He believes league tables should be publicly available for parents to see, especially for those looking to relocate here.
Terry and Heather Miles in Marown campaigned for grandparents’ rights to see their grandchildren. ’Having parents ban grandparents from seeing their children harms the grandchildren’s emotional development,’ Mrs Miles said.
Lee-Anne Taylor and Nigel Taylor’s petition looks to have students, who are sexual offenders, removed from schools to stop their victims having to face them on school grounds every day.
Paula Gerrard is seeking to have a gap in provision for those with learning disabilities addressed.
She said: ’People in the island are classed with learning disabilities when they have an IQ under 70, but that excludes many people who have an IQ over 70 from anything at all. This method of establishing whether someone has a learning disability doesn’t really work and it needs to be addressed.’
Douglas resident Millie Blenkinsop-French, who was diagnosed for a second time with breast cancer last year but was has been given the all-clear, lodged a petition calling for ’dignity in dying’ having previously campaigned for a reform to assisted-dying laws.
Craig Morris submitted a petition to establish a select committee to investigate adequacy of provision for ME sufferers.
Russell Walker handed a petition on behalf of friend Courtenay Heading after he was arrested to prevent a breach of the peace. Mr Heading was released a few hours later with no further action.
The campaigner has grievances concerning post-HPV vaccine harms and asked for a committee to be established to investigate test results of the vaccine’s contents.
Brian Coole lodged five petitions on behalf of campaigner Trevor Cowin directed at planning, the dealing of complaints about alleged maladministration and the appointment of a Tynwald Commissioner for Administration.
Petitioners Dorothy and Philip Salmon, of Douglas, believe the current code of conduct for public servants is not fit for purpose and called for a select committee to be set up to consider the fitness for purpose of the code of conduct for public servants - and any appropriate remedies.
Infrastructure Minister and Peel MHK Ray Harmer handed a petition on behalf of Peel Commissioners to investigate the ’unlawful’ removal of names from the electoral register in 2015.
