An event has been held in Laxey to honour former President of Tynwald Steve Rodan, who spent three decades in Manx politics.

Organisers said the function at the Laxey Working Men’s institute was held to celebrate the ’longstanding contribution of Mr Rodan to politics at local and national level and to the communities of Laxey, Lonan, and Maughold’.

Raised in Glasgow, he moved to the island in 1987 and his political career included time as a Laxey Commissioner, MHK, government minister and Speaker of The House of Keys, before becoming president in 2016.

He has also played a leading role in local community groups such as Laxey & Lonan Heritage Trust and the Laxey Fair Committee.

The function was organised by Garff Commissioners with contributions from the Captain of Maughold Parish, Clare Christian, and the Captain of Lonan Parish, Captain Stephen Carter.

Representatives were also present from all the charities and community groups that Mr Rodan has supported over the past years.

Entertainment was provided by the Manx Voices, Laxey based harpist Alexandra Rotheroe, and Chris and Howard Caine who recited some ’witty amusing’ poetic pieces written specially for the occasion in honour of Mr Rodan.

Mr Rodan is succeeded as President by Lawrence Skelly, former enterprise minister and Rushen MHK.
