A scheme to replace Peel Harbour Road Bridge is scheduled to begin in September, planning approval pending.

Planning approval is currently being sought for the scheme, which is scheduled to take 16 weeks.

While the new bridge is built, a temporary bridge will span the River Neb slightly downstream, with access gained through Peel marina boatyard. The single-lane carriageway will be under the operation of traffic lights for the duration of the scheme.

The work is needed as the current hardwood timber bridge, which was built in 1938, has reached the end of its life.

A rolling maintenance programme has been in place since the 1990s, but further deterioration means it must be replaced.

The replacement bridge will be a single span structure with a concrete deck on steel beams and will continue to carry two lanes of traffic, along with a footpath.

Highway improvements will be made to the approaches in both directions and the load carrying capacity will increase from 20 to 44 tonnes.

The capital project is budgeted to cost £410,000.
