Legislation involving parking of motor homes and larger vehicles will not change without there first being a public consultation says DoI minister Ray Harmer.
A requisition meeting was called by concerned residents in Peel on Thursday to discuss issues including overnight and weekend parking of larger vehicles and proposed new laws transferring police powers to traffic wardens and parking officers enabling fixed penalty ticketing.
Mr Harmer attended along with Peel commissioners’ deputy chairman Christine Moughtin and town clerk Derek Sewell.
After the meeting the minister said: ’I was grateful for the opportunity to provide some clarity in relation to the parking of large vehicles in the Isle of Man and to explain that the current legislation has not changed.
’I have taken on board the comments made by motorhome owners and have already instigated a review to explore a range of issues, including the classification of vehicles.
’I appreciate that the vast majority of motorhome owners are responsible people who are considerate of the needs of others and support local businesses when visiting our towns and villages.
’We also welcome those who visit the island in these vehicles and value their economic contribution. However, there is a need to address the problems caused by some anti-social parking of large vehicles in residential areas.
’The department must look at this issue in the round and try to strike the right balance.
’I have given a commitment to hold a public consultation before any future changes to legislation are considered.
’We are continuing to work with local authorities to try to identify suitable areas where larger vehicles may park.’
Currently vehicles with an unladen weight in excess of 3,050kg should not be parked on restricted roads between 6pm and 7am, Monday to Friday, and all day on Saturday and Sunday.
A motorhome with an unladen weight of less than 3,050kg is classed as a car, irrespective of the length and height of the vehicle, and may park anywhere that a car can.
