They may conjure up scenes from Downton Abbey or an Agatha Christie mystery, but now could be your chance to become a butler.

Government House is advertising for a deputy house manager/butler-chauffeur to join its team at the home of the Lieutenant Governor.

In the advert, Government House says: ‘This is a hands-on operational role, combining responsibility for supervising and coordinating household staff with practical duties across the house and grounds.

‘You will be expected to lead by example and be directly involved in preparing for official functions, undertaking household and property tasks, supporting logistical arrangements and driving His Excellency and other authorised passengers.

‘Driving is a significant and regular part of the role, and you must have substantial driving experience and be confident in providing a professional and discreet service to senior officials and VIPs.’

The job promises plenty of variety, with duties ranging from preparing Government House for an official reception to responding to unexpected operational issues, as well as overseeing contractors, maintaining vehicles and assisting with the practical running of the house alongside the house manager.

The role also involves regular physical activity, including standing, walking, lifting and moving items such as furniture, equipment and supplies. Applicants must be able to undertake these duties safely.

Government House says: ‘We are looking for someone who is practical, organised, dependable and discreet, with excellent judgement and a genuine willingness to get involved and make things happen.’

The successful applicant will work 37 hours a week, with flexible working required at weekends and on bank holidays.

The salary is between £38,395 and £44,857, with interviews expected to take place during the week commencing September 28, 2026.

There is also a rather ominous warning in the job description, which adds: ‘The role carries responsibility for maintaining standards and exercising judgement in circumstances where errors may have reputational implications for Government House and the Isle of Man Government.’
