They conjure up scenes from Downtown Abbey or an Agatha Christie mystery but now could be your chance to become a butler.
Government House is advertising for a deputy house manager/butler-chauffeur to join its team at the home of the Lieutenant Governor.
In the advert, Government House says: ‘This is a hands-on operational role, combining responsibility for supervising and coordinating household staff with practical duties across the house and grounds.
‘You will be expected to lead by example and be directly involved in preparing for official functions, undertaking household and property tasks, supporting logistical arrangements and driving His Excellency and other authorised passengers.
‘Driving is a significant and regular part of the role, and you must have substantial driving experience and be confident in providing a professional and discreet service to senior officials and VIPs.’
The role will be varied, according to Government House, which could involve preparing Government House for an official reception or responding to an unexpected operational issue, as well as overseeing contractors, maintaining vehicles or assisting with the practical running of the house, working alongside the house manager.
The role also involves regular physical activity, including standing, walking, lifting and moving items such as furniture, equipment and supplies. Applicants must be able to undertake these duties safely.
Government House says: ‘We are looking for someone who is practical, organised, dependable and discreet, with excellent judgement and a genuine willingness to get involved and make things happen.’
The role will be for 37 hours a week and will involve flexible working at weekends and bank holidays.
The salary will be between £38,395-£44,857. Interviews are expected to take place during the week commencing 28 September 2026.
